Active Listening — PART ONE

Competitive Intel for InfoTech and MedTech

NB : INOVIS Inc. is the boutique branch of the global INOVIS group that specializes in creative, tailored, proactive CI services for a select number of InfoTech & MedTech clients. By comparison, INOVIS AG, which focusses on Pharma & Biotech, is a mid-sized agency offering both bespoke CI solutions and proprietary in-house CI tools to a broader client base in the Life Sciences field. Both the Pharma and Tech sides' strict specialty and focus create synergies from each entity's talent pool and experience.

Listening Proactively

Active listening is a crucial, yet often overlooked, tool for gathering competitive intelligence. When conducting interviews, debriefings, or field conversations, active listening helps you:

Extract deeper information - People often reveal more when they feel genuinely heard. Paraphrasing what someone says and asking clarifying questions can prompt them to elaborate on key details they might otherwise gloss over.

Catch non-verbal cues - Being fully present allows you to notice hesitations, changes in tone, or body language that might signal when someone is uncomfortable, hiding something, or particularly confident about certain information.

Build rapport and trust - Sources are more likely to share sensitive or detailed information with someone who demonstrates genuine interest and understanding rather than just mechanically checking boxes on a list.

Identify inconsistencies - When you're truly engaged with what someone is saying, you're better positioned to notice when their account contradicts itself or conflicts with other information you've gathered.

Follow productive tangents - Sometimes the most valuable intelligence comes from unexpected directions. Active listening helps you recognize when to pursue an unplanned line of questioning rather than rigidly sticking to a prepared script.

The technique is particularly valuable in human intelligence (HUMINT) operations where the quality of information often depends on the relationship between the collector and the source.
